Robert Lyons, M.D.
Robert Lyons, M.D.
Dr Lyons is a native of Galion, Ohio, a small north central Ohio town in the heart of farm country. He spent his youth outdoors and on the sports fields playing football, running track and earning his Eagle Scout before moving on to his undergraduate studies at Youngstown State University where he graduated with Honors as a member of the inaugural class of the Honors Program. He then attended the Medical College of Ohio and at the graduation ceremony he was sworn in as a Lieutenant in the US Air Force by his brother. Dr. Lyons then completed his internship at Malcolm Grow Medical Center on Andrews AFB in Maryland, where he was named the intern of the year by his peers, and then moved to San Antonio where he served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force for a year prior to starting his residency in ophthalmology at Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brooke Army medical Center. During his training in San Antonio, he was able to participate in one medical mission trip to Honduras where he performed cataract and pterygium surgery. After he completed his residency training, Dr Lyons was handpicked to remain at the residency program to help train future residents with the skill set to perform high level cataract surgery. In the three remaining years of his US Air Force career, Dr. Lyons was able to participate in three other medical mission trips, two in Panama, and another in Honduras in which he served as lead for a contingent of resident and staff physicians, and accompanying Air Force personnel. In the midst of all that, he served a tour in Operation Iraqi Freedom as the only microsurgeon opthalmologist in the Iraqi theater, and also helped develop the refractive surgery program at Wilford Hall medical Center where he performed thousands of laser vision correction procedures on active duty service members, including pilots and aircrew, to ensure their readiness for deployment out of contacts and glasses. After his time in the Air Force, Dr Lyons then moved to the metroplex and has served the larger DFW community for nearly two decades performing the same high level cataract and refractive surgery he trained residents to perform. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Christian Ophthalmology Society, and Texas Ophthalmology Association, Dr Lyons has continued in his mission work locally by volunteering to do cataract surgery through the Cornerstone Assistance Network cataract clinic in Fort Worth.
Dr. Lyons has been happily married to his highschool sweetheart, Amy, for over 30 years. Together, they have three children and one grandchild (so far). The family is spread out over the North Texas area and the desire to serve is present as Amy is a nurse, their oldest is a therapist, their middle is a nurse and training to be a nurse anesthesiologist, and their youngest is a kindergarten teacher. All three of their children are happily married. The family shares a tight bond and enjoy their time together immensely.
Dr. Lyons takes this dedication to family and carries it to his patients as he treats every patient as if they were family. He is active in his church and uses the grace of Jesus to motivate him toward being cheerful, kind, and respectful to everyone. It is the focus of Christ's love that drives Dr. Lyons to treat his patients with compassion and a straightforward honesty that is often difficult to find in his profession. In his spare time, Dr. Lyons enjoys travelling with his family, he is an avid hunter and fisherman, and when not in the clinic or the operating room can typically be found outside enjoying God's creation.
